Image South artist Matthew Mills believes that “Painting is an expression of freedom, where the creative spirit, mind and body merge together at points in time to create works. In this sense, painting is a holistic endeavor. From my earliest days of painting, I learned that painting is my personal retreat; it is something that affords me not only the opportunity to grow as a person, but as a painter. My perception of life is intricately intertwined with painting. I do not simply see a mountain or a field, but see color ranges and detail. I am always compelled to paint what I see. What I see and appreciate most are simple elements of beauty that captivate my senses: hidden fields, cascading clouds, or an open meadow of flowers.”
From 1986-1990, I attended the Professional School for Fine and Monumental Arts in Plovdiv, Bulgaria where my major of study was oil painting. Afterward, I attended the competitive National Academy of Arts in Sophia, Bulgaria from 1992-1997, where I received a Master’s Degree in oil painting. Currently, I reside in Sophia and paint full-time in my studio. Most of my current works are traditional subject matters of landscapes that are conveyed in the impressionistic style.
