Image South artist Michael McCarty was born in Dothan, AL and attended Troy State University for two years where he studied painting and design under international Fluxus art movement painter Tommy Mew, PhD. McCarty transferred to Auburn University and graduated with a B.F.A in Visual Design in 1970. After moving to Atlanta that same year, McCarty accepted a position as “designer-illustrator” with the renowned GraphicsGroup Studio. He also began freelancing as an Art Director in the music industry designing album covers for producer/songwriter Buddy Buie and his group, Atlanta Rhythm Section.
McCarty continued to focus on artwork for album covers until 1991 when he chose to return full time to his true passion of painting. His work can be found in galleries and private collections throughout the United States. Some of his collectors include Isaac Hayes, Patti Smith, Little Richard, Johnny Van Zant, Willie Nelson, Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston.
